Accounting, in real time

Accounting, in real time

Finance teams have always worked with a financial picture that lags behind the business.

Since Pacioli wrote down double-entry more than five hundred years ago, accounting has been shaped by the calendar. We close the month, then the quarter, then the year, always working back through something that has already happened.

So we don't really know what finance becomes when it is no longer behind. What does a controller do with a week that isn't spent catching up? What does a CFO ask when the answer is already there? And what does a team of some of the sharpest people in the business do when so much of their time is no longer spent reconstructing the past?

I think we're about to find out.

A business never stops; customers sign, invoices go out, people join, payments arrive, plans change. Accounting follows all of it, but historically it has done so at a distance. The business moves first, and finance catches up afterwards.

That gap has shaped the way finance teams work for a very long time. A huge amount of effort goes into bringing everything back together, checking that the numbers are complete, understanding what changed and making sure the picture is right before anyone can really rely on it. It is simply how accounting has always worked.

What changes if the work can happen much closer to the moment the business happens?

Imagine a system that understands how your team works, follows the same process each time and knows when something needs your judgement. It can keep the work moving as information becomes available, remember the decisions you've made before and bring everything back to you with the context and evidence you need to review it properly. Your role is not taken away. You still decide whether you are willing to put your name on the number.

That is what we have spent the last few years building towards.

We started with the foundations because we knew this would only work if those foundations were right. Stacks had to connect deeply to the systems finance teams already use. The parts of accounting that need to be exact had to remain exact. And every action needed to be visible and controlled, so a finance team could understand what happened and why.

For a long time, the intelligence itself was the missing piece. The idea was there, but the technology was not yet capable of taking on meaningful accounting work reliably. That has changed.

Today, we're introducing a new way of working in the Stacks Workspace: real-time accounting.

Read the announcement on linkedin.

The work can happen as the business operates. Agents can carry it forward, your team can review and sign off, and month-end can gradually become less about catching up and more about reviewing work that has already been done. All on top of the ERP you already run.

What finance does with that time is not ours to decide. It belongs to the people doing the work: their judgement, their curiosity and their understanding of which numbers matter and why.

That was always the most valuable part of the job. Now it gets more of the time it deserves.

Here's to the business and the accounting moving together. Here's to the people who sign the numbers, and to what they do next.
